Wechiau Hippo Sanctuary

The Wechiau Hippo Sanctuary is a community protected area located in the Upper West Region of Ghana. It consists of a 40-kilometres stretch along the banks of the Black Volta which forms part of Ghana's boundary with Burkina Faso. It boasts of hippos, bats, chameleons, hedgehogs and different species of lizards and snakes. The sanctuary is an excellent place to see birds with about 200 species recorded. It is excellent for bird watching. Morning and Evening River Cruises provide a greater opportunity of watching hippos, birds and other wildlife species.

Afternoons may be spent trekking the trails, visiting local homes, and even relaxing in our Hippo Hide. They are high on the trees and are excellent positions for bird watching. The best time to see hippos is in the dry seasons, usually November through June. June through August is a good time to see birds in all their colorful breeding plumage Tourist may also entertain themselves with early morning songs by the numerous bird species and xylophone music. River safari is also available on the Black Volta with an opportunity of spotting hippopotamus, Violet Turacoes, Malachite Kingfishers and Vervet monkeys.

There are tourist lodges in the communities which offer many opportunities to meet local people. This relatively undisturbed Lobi area has distinct architectural designs, interesting marriage systems and funeral rites.
